Mars Spiders was approached by the Metadiet team to create a truly modern and innovative food consultancy web app. A web app of this sort features a set of bespoke algorithms created with the help of professional dieticians. The specific secret formula calculates a unique menu for the end user. Users can also share and create their own recipes which will be recalculated in the backend database based on each ingredient’s nutritional value.

After the user is registered on the site they go through a few questions designed to generate a "bespoke diet". This is the diet they would have to follow to achieve their objective. The 3 main objectives are: Lose your Weight, Maintain your Weight or Build your Body. We have a database of all common ingredients and their characteristics including Kcal, Proteins, Carbohydrates and Lipids, and a wealth of recipes. One of the co-founders of Metadiet is a French-born chef supremely knowledgeable in the culinary art.

Challenge

For our client we developed an algorithm that permitted them to perfectly match recipes with users and their needs. The algorithm produces the perfect daily menu needed by a user to reach their goal. It will tell them the exact amount of each ingredient to put in their recipes. This amount will change from one person to another. Our team transformed the original idea into exclusive UI designs which in turn were coded by our development team. Creating a huge database of ingredients and recipes was an epic task, but it was handled extremely well by Mars Spiders’ technical team. Translating an Excel-based formula that matched individual requirements into an AI backend data crunching machine was a challenging task. But here our team really shined and achieved outstanding results. We collaborated in utilising a divide-and-conquer method – the client was assigned to a python data scientist whose service we integrated with our Amazon cloud-based backend application.

Outcome

Metadiet is proving a huge success. It attracts thousands of visitors attested to by the number of users signing up daily. The outcome is a flawless User Experience with an attractive look and feel. Our client recommends us wholeheartedly to their network of friends and business associates. No doubt there is scope for future refinement - we anticipate the site will materialize as a dedicated mobile application in the near future. We are focusing on user-engagement over an extended period, with Metadiet becoming a household name. This could make it a first port of call for people with all kinds of dietary and nutritional requirements, and a resource where members are supported by a community of like-minded enthusiasts.
